Insight into Nuclear Power Issues in Taiwan by Professor Way Kuo

Professor Way Kuo, a Reliability Society (RS) distinguished member and the President of City University of Hong Kong, pointed out that Taiwan's government should focus on establishing a long-term energy policy at his book launch press conference held by Commonwealth Publishing Company in Taipei, Taiwan on June 7.

"Developing the nuclear power is not just saying yes or no, instead, the government should take the supply of energy, economic welfare, reliability and sustainability into consideration. In addition, the make or break factors of developing the nuclear power include time, distance and risk. Since the government of Taiwan lacks enough assessment on nuclear power, the people are hesitant on agreeing to the development of nuclear power." said Professor Way Kuo

In the press conference, Professor Way Kuo conveyed his point of view on the nuclear power issues in Taiwan. He thinks the staff at the nuclear power plant should be well trained and certified. He also stated that in order to better promote the development of nuclear power, the government should work on quality control, make public the evaluation report of the plant, and establish a rigorous training program.

Furthermore, he said that every resource has inevitable risks, hence how much danger people are willing to take is the main concern.

According to Professor Way Kuo, there are ways to address and resolve the concerns of the people on this issue, one of them being the wastes of nuclear power. Burning out the nuclear raw material completely and leaving no waste is the best technique which many countries are developing diligently. He predicted that more and more countries including America and Sweden will lay emphasis on nuclear power. He also predicted that the total number of nuclear power engines will increase yearly if they come up a way to cease serious accidents from happening at the site.

It was a successful book launch press conference. Professor Kuo shared his viewpoint on nuclear power issues with the general public. Nearly 60 renowned figures from Taiwan participated in the press conference, including Dr. Jiang Yi-huah, the Premier of Republic of China; Dr. Liu Chao-shiuan, the former Premier of Republic of China and the President of the General Association of Chinese Culture; Professor Ovid Tzeng Jyh-lang, Academician of Academia Sinica, along with the media.
